Must SeeThajiwas Glacier
Accessible by pony or a 3km trek, this glacier is the centrepiece of Sonamarg — ice and meadow side by side, with the valley opening to dramatic views of surrounding peaks.
TrekVishansar Lake
At 3,710m, this deep blue glacial lake reflects the surrounding peaks with mirror perfection. A 2-day trek from Sonamarg, Vishansar rewards with absolute wilderness solitude.
TrekKrishnasar Lake
Lying at 3,801m just beyond Vishansar, Krishnasar is surrounded by rocky peaks and alpine grasses. The two lakes together form one of Kashmir's finest trekking circuits.
High TrekGangabal Lake
A sacred lake at the foot of Harmukh Peak (5,142m), Gangabal is the highlight of the Gangabal circuit — a multi-day wilderness trek through some of Kashmir's most dramatic terrain.
ScenicSindh River
The Sindh flows alongside Sonamarg's approach road, offering spectacular riverside scenery, trout-fishing spots, and serene picnic settings with mountain backdrop.

How to Reach Sonamarg
By Air
Fly into Srinagar Airport (SXR), then drive 80km (~2.5 hours) via the scenic NH-1 along the Sindh River. Direct flights connect Srinagar with Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other major cities.
By Road from Srinagar
Shared taxis and private cabs depart from Srinagar's TRC (Tourist Reception Centre). The drive via Ganderbal takes 2–3 hours. State buses also ply this route in season.
Local Transport
Within Sonamarg, ponies are the primary mode of transport to Thajiwas Glacier and surrounding areas. Taxis are available for day trips along the valley road.
Trek Guide
Thajiwas Glacier Trek
A 3km trail from Sonamarg village through pine forest to the base of Thajiwas Glacier. Ponies available for the full route or part of the way. Ideal for families and first-time trekkers. The glacier is accessible year-round (road conditions permitting) and the meadow surrounding it blooms spectacularly in June–July.
Vishansar – Gangabal Circuit
One of Kashmir's finest multi-day treks, passing through Vishansar Lake, Krishnasar Lake, Gadsar Lake, Satsar Lakes, and culminating at Gangabal Lake beneath Harmukh Peak. The circuit traverses high passes, alpine meadows, and pristine wilderness virtually untouched by commercialisation. Best done June–September with a registered local guide.
Camping in Sonamarg
Thajiwas Meadow
The most accessible campsite — open meadow near the glacier base with mountain views on all sides. Several camp operators run seasonal tented camps here with basic amenities.
Vishansar Lake Base
A remote campsite on the Vishansar-Gangabal circuit. Clear skies, lake reflections, and zero light pollution make for one of Kashmir's finest stargazing experiences.
Sonamarg Village Campgrounds
Several established campsites along the Sindh River near the village, with tent accommodation, basic facilities, and easy access to all Sonamarg attractions.
